Artemide Tizio in new LED black version. Richard Sapper designed the Tizio table lamp for the Italian lighting company Artemide in 1972. The streamlined metal lamp works perfectly as a reading light or desk lamp because light beam can easily be adjusted to any direction. Despite its small base, the lamp stands steady in every angle, thanks to its counterbalanced metal arms. Tizio won the Compasso d'Oro design award in 1979 and it belongs to the collections of many museums, such as New York’s MoMA. Born in Germany in 1932, Richard Sapper created the Tizio desk lamp for Artemide in 1972. This now-classic design has gone on to become one of the best-selling light xtures ever produced. A proli c designer who famously turned down Steve Jobs offer of a job at Apple, Sapper died in 2015. Over a varied career spent designing everything from cars for Fiat to IBM’s rst ThinkPad to multiple items for Alessi, he made a point of reducing technically- dif cult design problems into concise, approachable items. As an icon of Italian design, Tizio graces the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It stands proud amongst the most celebrated icons of modern lighting, effortlessly blending function with style.
