A Definitive Guide to Twinkie Fryingg

Introduction to Twinkie Frying

According to The New York Times, Christopher Sell from Rugby, England created the Deep-Fried Twinkie. Christopher Sell worked in “chip shops” in Britain from a young age, where inventing new deep-fried foods was “a rite of passage”.

Later in life, Sell emigrated to the United States and eventually opened up his own “chip shop” in Brooklyn, New York. This is where the Deep-Fried Twinkie was born. Twinkies were among many of Sell’s attempts at new deep-fried creations, in the company of candy bars, M&Ms®, and English muffins. However, Deep-Fried Twinkies seem to have taken off the most.

Interesting fact- the Deep-Fried Twinkies sold in Sell’s shop are fried in the same grease in which fish is fried. This allegedly gives the Twinkies “that extra something”.

Make your own (superior) Deep-Fried Twinkies at home and save money.

Most of us have probably tried Deep-Fried Twinkies for the first time at events such as state fairs or carnivals. And, most of us likely overpaid by a gross amount for that first Deep-Fried Twinkie.  One can likely produce TEN Deep-Fried Twinkies for what one can purchase a single Deep-Fried Twinkie at the local fair.

Also, aside from the obvious coin-saving benefits- making your own Deep-Fried Twinkies at home allows for a much higher level of customization. What ingredients do I need to make a Deep-Fried Twinkie?

For the most part, the ingredients needed to create your own Deep-Fried Twinkies are universal, with the amount of ingredients needed changing dependent upon the number of Deep-Fried Twinkies that you want to produce.

Note:

Just remember- the goal is to DEEP FRY the Twinkies! Hence, put enough oil in the pan to completely submerge the size of the batch with which you’re working.

Let’s Get Started…

First thing’s FROST!

If one were to deep fry a Twinkie without freezing it beforehand, the cream filling would melt, fall through the coating of breading, and possibly land in the hot grease which creates a situation ripe for grease burn.

MAINTAIN EXTREME CARE WHILE WORKING WITH HOT OIL/GREASE

Preparing the oil

I recommend keeping your batches at a maximum of four Twinkies at a time (unless you are using an industrial-sized fryer). It seems the Deep-Fried Twinkies turn out better when produced in small batches because it makes the process easier to manage.

Preparing the batter

1.)    Mix all wet ingredients together in their own bowl.

2.)    Mix all dry ingredients together in their own bowl.
